There are now 24 microchip databases!

COMPLIANT UK MICROCHIP DATABASES:

You must make sure that your dog or cat is registered on one of the following databases (they all meet government standards). You can be fined up to £500 if they are not registered on a compliant database and if your dog or cat has out of date contact information.

Please be aware of new annual subscription charges popping up! Below is the current information we could find: UPDATED 8th September 2026.

If you are a veterinary clinic or independent microchip implanter affiliated to a particular database, please check what subscription charges your customers are signing up too.

WARNING: There are non-compliant databases who charge and don’t record your data anywhere, this is why it is crucial to check you are on one of the following 24 databases. Unregistered microchips will not reunite you with your dog or cat.

You can check the microchip number if you do not know which database your pet is registered on.

If you do not have the microchip number, you can ask any of the following to scan your dog or cat for it:

  • a vet
  • a dog warden
  • a rescue centre

Notes & Clarifications:

• All 25 databases listed in the UK Government’s official microchipping guidance are included in the table above.

• Where a database does not publicly list prices, it’s because the official site doesn’t publish them — you’ll need to contact the provider directly to confirm current charges.

• Some providers (e.g., Animal Tracker, Identibase, Petlog, PetScanner) use subscription charges or optional recurring plans for additional services such as lost pet alerts, helplines, and notifications.

• HomeAgain and Lost Paws are confirmed free to register and update services — no subscription required.

• PetDatabase and My Pet offer deals for rescues.

• National Veterinary Data Service is not a pet owner registration database — it’s used internally by vets and professionals.

Databases with Unknown or Unpublished Pricing:

• SmartTrace (if you know the price, please let us know)

Quick Tips Before Registering:

• Check current pricing on the official database site before you register — some providers update fees or introduce new tiers.

• Be cautious of non-Government lists or third-party signup sites, as some may be scams or not actually register your pet with a DEFRA-approved database.

• Registering your pet with a Government DEFRA-approved database is a legal requirement in the UK and failure to update contact info can result in £500 fines.

* The Association of Microchip Database Operators (AMDO) 11 of the 24 databases, say they are playing a lead role in raising standards to improve the effectiveness of pet reunification, customer service and general animal welfare. Setting standards to achieve a balanced self-regulated environment and working in partnership with relevant animal welfare stakeholders.

The Central Microchip Portal or Single Point of Search (SPoS) is going to be trialed by four databases and then rolled out to include all eleven AMDO members. The remaining 14 databases are being invited to join, maybe you can help by asking them yourself?

To report a database operator or file a grievance, submit your concerns to the Association of Microchip Database Operators (AMDO) ⁠AMDO Complaints Process. You can do this directly using the online ⁠AMDO Report a Database form, which handles complaints for Defra-compliant UK microchip databases. 

AMDO aims to acknowledge receipt of complaints within 10 working days and investigate uncomplicated claims within the same timeframe AMDO Complaints Process. 

For a complaint to be investigated, it must allege that an AMDO member has breached legislation or AMDO rules, policies, or standards AMDO Complaints Process. Please note that AMDO handles complaints about database operators, but cannot directly respond to enquiries regarding specific microchip numbers or help with refunds for non-compliant databases

Animal Tracker Microchip Database are moving all their microchip registrations to Identibase Microchip Database.

Identibase are one of a few larger databases charging an annual subscription charge, so please check.

Not all databases charge yearly, this is a new phenomenon!

You are allowed to register the microchip number on which ever database you want! This new annual subscription charge is going to cause so many problems!

EVERY PET OWNER MUST CHECK THEIR PETS MICROCHIP REGISTRATION IS HOLDING THEIR NAME AND CONTACT INFORMATION: Unregistered microchips will not bring your pet home. Vets do not register microchips, they only copy the microchip number for their files.

Since microchipping our pets is mandatory by law, should the pet microchip identification database system operate primarily as a public service rather than a commercial market?

In Defra’s response to the petition, asking them to introduce the Central Microchip Portal, they say AMDO (11 of the 25 databases) are developing commercial solutions which will be industry-led!

Most people don’t understand database governance—but they do understand lost pets, delays, and profit being put before animal welfare.

The key points you need to understand are:
• The system is fragmented across 25 databases
• Vets, wardens, police and rescuers cannot quickly find owners
• Government promised a central system
• They are now letting the industry run it instead
• That could mean paywalls, delays, and conflicts of interest
• This affects lost pets getting home quickly

This isn’t what we were promised.

We only have until the 5 June to reach the 100,000 signatures and trigger a debate in Parliament, to have the opportunity to save the independent Central Microchip Portal, a single lookup point, available 24/7 for all authorised users, free of charge, including all 25 compliant databases.
