The 80-year-old stands at the door at night waiting for ‘her boy’ to come home
A huge number of Hackney residents have joined the search for an elderly widow’s lost dog, which she misses “to the point of heartbreak.”
Philomena Boenke, 80, has been the proud owner of her dog Brandy for all 16 years of his life.
Philomena, who is originally from Ireland but now lives in Leyton, has been profoundly deaf since she was a child. Her husband died at a very young age, and she has also lost a daughter, a brother, and her other dog.
Philomena’s son, who is in his sixties, took Brandy for a walk on Hackney marshes when he vanished.
The dog went missing at around 7.30pm. Despite the family searching for hours into the night, he was not found.
And that was on October 10, more than three months ago.
When Covid restricions permitted, Philomena trailed round vets and pet shops searching for her companion. She gets up in the middle of the night and stands at the front door watching up and down the street in case he turns up.
As Philomena is deaf, she is terrified that she wouldn’t hear him barking if he is nearby.
Campaign organisers believe he has been stolen.
Speaking about Philomena, a volunteer running the campaign to find Brandy said: “[Philomena] is a resilient, determined, hard-working, capable woman. But she’s over 80 and in a pandemic.
“She brought her family up on her own, she’s a tough cookie. But you see her sometimes and her eyes fill up.
“I’ve been out there looking late at night. He is not a stupid dog, and the canal was way off. He didn’t wander off, he just didn’t. It’s like he’s vanished into thin air.
“She’s sweet, kind, humble, grateful, worried about everyone working to hard to find Brandy. She doesn’t want to be a burden.”
