Rupert – just one-year-old and worth £2,500 – went missing near Daniel Granger Hairdressing in Northampton after a man was filmed scooping him up under his arm

CCTV footage shows the moment an alleged thief appears to steal a valuable Chihuahua from outside a hair salon.

The pedigree one-year-old pooch, called Rupert and worth £2,500, was snatched from the street after it escaped on Thursday evening.

Frantic owner Katie Lane, 30, who runs Daniel Granger Hairdressing in Northampton, and her staff searched for her beloved pet but to no avail.

CCTV shows Rupert scampering around Abington Street outside the salon at 6.24pm before a man scooped him up and carried him away under his arm.

Katie, who owns Rupert with her partner and hair dresser Daniel Granger, was reunited with her beloved pet on Friday.

Following a high-profile social media appeal, the tiny pooch was handed him at 1pm today.

Owner Katie said: “Just a few hours after we put the story out on social media, Rupert was handed into police.

“Apparently a young Eastern European girl handed him into the police station.

“We can only guess what happened but we are just relieved to have him home. He is very thirsty and hungry but apart from that he is fine.

“It just shows the power of social media.”

Katie uploaded the footage on the salon’s Facebook and Twitter pages which has went viral with more than 50,000 views and shares.
